It was a long one at work today and between the 14 hour day and the 5 flights (!) I got to thinking…
Tis the season for flight delays, cancellations, extended duty days, minimum rest, sold out flights, the flu… and in times like these, I find myself asking why I do this crazy job??? I find it helps to try and focus on all the reasons why this job is so amazing, and though there are many reasons I love the career I chose, I’ve decided to list my top 5!
#1- The schedule! I knew pretty early on that the 9-5 routine wasn’t for me. Now after spending the last 9 years doing what I do, I can’t imagine going back! The flexibility of this job is like no other that I know of.  With anywhere from 13-15 days off a month, vacation weeks, and the ability to trade and drop shifts, I often have so much time to myself, and I can spend that time doing anything I want! Whether it’s traveling to some foreign land or relaxing in my pyjamas for days… I can’t imagine it any other way!
#2- The travel perks! (Obviously!) I got bitten with the travel bug at an early age, and I knew I would spend a majority of my life exploring this planet. Little did I know I would be fortunate enough to find a career that not only PAID me to travel the globe but allowed me to fly ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, on multiple airlines basically for free. This is definitely what fuels me, and I can’t imagine giving up that perk anytime soon!
#3 It’s not boring! Waking up in different cities every day, never working with the same people… it’s definitely not for everyone but I love it. As much as I love being home, I still love putting on the hotel robe and ordering room service and having a little mini holiday every time I go to work.
#4- Meeting new people every day! What a lot of people don’t know is that we rarely work with the same people twice! That means that every time I go to work, I’m spending up to 5 days in a metal tube with complete strangers… And while this sounds like a potential disaster waiting to happen, more often than not, these strangers become your best friends in a very short amount of time!
#5- The layovers! Though some are more glamourous than others, even the less exciting places can become an adventure as you never know where you’ll end up or what you’ll end up doing. When you are fortunate enough to end up with an amazing layover, there is something very surreal about realizing you are getting paid to sip a margarita on the beach in Mexico, or swim with turtles in Maui, or listen to live music at a pub in Dublin!
Yes we work long, crazy days and we are often tired, sick and missing home, but even as I made this list, I knew in my heart that I chose the right career! I sometimes think about switching jobs and maybe trying something more stable and routine for a while… But I’m not ready yet… I still have so much more exploring to do! 🙂
