Sooooo today on the plane I got asked for the 100th time if I was wearing hair extensions! As always, I took it as a compliment and said no but it gave me the idea to write a little post about what I do to keep my hair long and thick. I’ll tell you what works for me and hopefully some of it works for you guys too but don’t forget, a lot of it is genetics and luck!
What a lot of people don’t know about me is that my hair is naturally DARK DARK brown ( I know don’t tell anyone!) So I do have to bleach my hair and be extra careful to take good care of it. I used to highlight and dye my own hair, so I’m totally for that if you trust your skills, but if you want the least amount of damage and breakage spend the money and see a good hairdresser! I found mine on Instagram (check her out at @hairbyamberjoy she’s amazing) Hairdressers often post pictures of their work so you can see what they can do before you go in!
I’ve been using the Redken All Soft line for YEARS! I use the regular shampoo and conditioner but the real miracle worker is the heavy cream deep conditioner. I use it every time I shampoo my hair. I only wash the roots and then deep condition my ends with the deep conditioner. Sometimes I leave it on as a mask.
I love having super clean hair, and I like to wash it all the time, but I’m really trying to get in the habit of not washing it as often. In between shampoos I use dry shampoo. The best one I’ve found is Batiste. I get it at Shoppers Drug Mart. Super cheap and works amazing!
I VERY rarely blow dry my hair. I almost always let it air dry. That definitely helps with damage. Â I know hairdressers will recommend getting trims, and will hate me for saying this, Â but I hardly ever cut my hair(eek!) I find by using decent quality products, and going easy on the heat products, there isn’t a need to cut it as often!
I’ve also taken biotin in the past as I’ve heard it helps with growing. I think it made a difference but you have to be REALLY diligent with it and take it every day which I am so bad at.
And last but not least, it may sound kooky, but my friend told me if you cut your hair on the new moon it grows faster. So I literally cut a millimetre off a random piece of hair on the new moon… Hey it can’t hurt right??
